Job Summary:
Responsible for the preliminarily identification of gem characteristics in accordance with data self-collected and collected by the Analytics team. Advises others if data needs to be collected in a specific manner.
Responsible for making preliminary conclusions on gems, making necessary identification and classification calls that are required for each specific type of report requested by clients.
Enters concluding results into software for report generation or seeks further evaluation by the Laboratory team. Ensures data is stored correctly to servers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Identifies and documents the characteristics of gems.
- May use standard, high tech, and specialty gemological testing equipment to examine and identify gems to determine if they are natural and if they have been treated or enhanced in any form.
- Works with Analytics team, as needed, to obtain data from advanced gemological equipment
- Enters gemological data into computer database.
- May input identification information and assign a preliminary conclusion to a report or provide back-up to a preliminary report.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of Analytical Chemistry, Solid State Physics, or one of the Earth Sciences and some statistical abilities.
- Able to operate standard and advanced gemological instruments.
- Ability to get along with a diverse group of individuals.

Supervision / Autonomy / Authority:
Works under direct supervision with limited or no day to day instruction.
Education / Training / Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Sciences or related fields; and minimum of 1 year of related gem identification experience as well as experience with analytical equipment and data analysis; or equivalent combination of training and/or experience.
Graduate Gemologist and/or FGA diploma required.
